This is a building near the centre of the City of Fafe, erected within
a 16-hectare Urban Park, which is part of an undertaking
by the successive representatives of a modern and enlightened local government. The urban and environmental quality of this city has no parallel among the cities of similar size in the country.
This facility was designed to serve various purposes: sports, shows, and exhibitions. In a clear reference to the work of Mies Van der Rohe, the design aimed for a structural solution which, by suspending the building’s roof by means of six impressive protruding iron beams, would free the space from any obstacles, while giving it the dimension required by the specific programme. This structural solution has made it possible for a suspended grid
of projecting beams to be the finishing touch of the ceiling and
the building to be viewed from the inside as two fractioned
bodies – the first floor, housing no structure, separates the body attached to the floor from the “levitating” body, suspended
from the roof.
