AfuradaMaster Plan
Alexandre Alves Costa, Sergio Fernandez and José Luis Gomes (Atelier 15)

The rehabilitation of this fishing settlement was designed to ensure its integrity both in terms of the constructed heritage and from the perspective of cultural and living experiences, which must not be subverted.

One of the major concerns was to remove the traffic from the urban area, thus allowing the community to maintain the traditional and informal use of the streets.

The platform of the Fishing Port is to be extended and will accommodate the necessary infrastructures: new warehouses for tools and equipment and the fishing market. The traditional place for hanging clothes is to be maintained, while a new washer may be built and used for a limited period of time, ultimately being converted into a monument.

Another undertaking will be the Civic Centre of Afurada, which is supposed to complete the currently dispersed west quarter of the town. This building is to play an important role in the community, being a kind of practical and symbolic synthesis of life at Afurada. Overlooking the river with its routine activities and boats, will be a school and a market place, social, civic and religious institutions, and an area for fairs or festivities.
